Sweet Baby Penguin Tries To Make New Friends

We tend to classify people into two different categories: those who are introverts and those who are extroverts.

For humans, being an introvert is fine and there are plenty of opportunities for introverts to thrive in today’s world.

That isn’t necessarily the case, however, for Emperor penguins. Growing up in the harsh winters of the Antarctic, those penguins need to learn how to get along with other chicks so they can survive and live a long life.

This may be difficult to picture, especially considering the fact that we don’t live anywhere near these penguins. Thankfully, we have video clips from the Snow Chick: A Penguin’s Tale series from BBC Earth to give us an up close and personal look.

In the first video we have for you below, you get to see a small penguin that was having a bit of a rough time. You see, he was the last penguin to hatch and was behind the rest of the penguins when it comes to development.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons why he was so reluctant to leave the comfort and safety of his mother and strike out on his own. His mother knew that it was necessary for him to find some friends, however, so she gave him some tough love and sent him on his way.

As you watch the baby penguin going around and trying to make friends with the other penguins, you really get to see the scope of how much smaller he is than the others. You also see that among penguins, similar to humans, the smaller ones are not always welcomed with open arms.

After trying for a while, the little penguin decides to retreat back to his mother and get some comfort. She was more than happy to give it to him.

In a follow-up video, the baby penguin is searching for his mom as a blizzard is on the horizon. The temperatures are dropping quickly and with all the commotion and the high wind, the little one can’t hear his mother calling.

Fortunately, they were able to connect with each other at the last moment but the little one’s body temperature had already dropped significantly. They needed to find comfort and safety inside the group of other penguins as the temperatures dropped to 60° below zero.

You can see it for yourself in this video:
