Nature is full of surprises, and for Kerry Ward, his daughter, and a friend of theirs, the surprise they got while paddleboarding off the coast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, quite literally leapt out at them. Managing to find themselves smack-dab in the middle of a swarm of mobula rays, the group was treated to the extraordinary sight of rays jumping out of the water all around them – fins flapping like wings in what seems like an earnest attempt to take to the sky.
Also known as jumping or flying rays, mobula rays are typically quite shy toward divers, which makes them difficult to study. However, they occasionally gather in larger groups and collectively perform the aerial acrobatics Ward serendipitously played witness to. Watch as tens of thousands of rays engage in their own epic festival of flight in the seas off Baja California.Whizzco
