A supervolcano is one of only two natural disasters with the capability of knocking out life on earth. While we have eyes trained skywards watching out for a planet-killing asteroid, a supervolcano can erupt without warning, and there is nothing that can be done to prevent that. It is believed that it was a supervolcano that accelerated the commencement of the last ice age and caused a genetic bottleneck on earth.
