These tortoises have come up with an ingenious solution to the problem of hot temperatures in their home of the Aldabra Atoll, which is a part of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. Finding shelter from the sun is a matter of life and death, and the tortoises keep cool by resting in caves. Not only do the tortoises ensure their survival, but they also create an entire ecosystem, as their waste feeds other organisms on the atoll, such as crabs and insects.
According to Dennis Hansen, leader of the team that discovered these cave-dwelling tortoises, this behavior spans for generations. He justifies that assumption with noticeable worn paths that lead to the depths of the caves. So, for centuries, these witty tortoises have been hiding from the heat. They certainly are clever creatures! Watch the video below to see these cave-dwelling tortoises in action!
