Sometimes, the best offense is a good defense. This holds especially true for a clever little lizard that, by changing its color and the way it walks, makes itself look like something predators don’t want to come anywhere near.
The bushveld lizard is a very interesting little reptile that spends most of its time scurrying around the sands of Southern Africa in search of food and avoiding predators.
On the surface, it looks like any other average lizard. Long toes to help it run around in the sand, a long tail, a black body with some colored spots. For all intents and purposes, it’s just another lizard.
But when trouble is near, something happens that makes it seem like a different kind of creature entirely!
The oogpister beetle is a bug that many animals fear because it can spray stinging formic acid from its backside, which can deter almost any predator that comes close.
Since the bushveld lizard already has a similar color pattern, all it has to do is prop itself up a little more, and start walking around the sands of Southern Africa in a similar fashion to the frightening beetle.
This mimicry gives the little lizard some of the best camouflage ever and gives it the ability to almost walk around completely free of fear from being eaten.
