What I first heard about the possibility of a monstrous sized bat existing in the world, I have to admit that I had my doubts. Even when I was shown the picture that supposedly showed such a large megabat from the Philippines, I still doubted.
As it turns out, that megabat picture was no fake. In fact, it was even written up by Snopes and is most likely a “Golden Crown Flying Fox.” Here are a few things that you may not have known about this frightening creature.
When you look at the picture above, you might feel as if you are looking at something out of a horror movie. In reality, however, it’s a creature that shares our planet with us.
Although a positive identification of the species remains to be seen, it is thought to be a golden-capped fruit bat (Acerodon jubatus), even though the picture doesn’t show the golden fur around the head that is indicative of the species. It may be that it is just another type of megabat, such as an old world fruit bat or a large flying Fox.
Yes, there are more than one type of megabat in the world!
When you really get down to it, it doesn’t matter which species the bat is, it’s a picture that is right out of one of our nightmares. It was first posted in August 2018 on the “Nature Is Metal” Section of Reddit. According to the post, it was a “Flying Fox” in the Philippines.
Reddit user “sakundes” also included two additional pictures, just in case viewers were skeptical. One of those pictures was an un-cropped image of the original and the other was the same megabat from a different angle.
Now that we all know the bat is real, it is important to put it in perspective. The wingspan of the bat may be up to 5 1/2 feet but it is not “human-sized.”

Animal Diversity says that this type of bat may have a large wingspan but they only grow to about a foot in length. At most, they may weigh a little less than 3 pounds. Even so, I don’t think I’ll be going outside after dark for a while.
