At this point, I think it’s pretty fair to say that we know recycling is a great thing to do. In addition to reducing the amount of waste being carted off to landfills, it’s also saves energy, conserves natural resources, and reduces pollution.
Considering a 2013 study out of Yale estimating that 294 million tons of waste was sent to landfills that year, it’s clear we desperately need recycling and composting programs to work.
Thankfully, a lot of cities agree and are implementing mandatory recycling and composting.
I consider myself fortunate to live in a city that’s on board. Extremely on board, as it turns out. Here in Seattle, we actually have bins for just about everything—recycling, composting, food and yard waste, and garbage.
And while I fully support these initiatives, it can all get a little confusing! There are so many categories that it can be difficult to know where to properly dispose of your waste.
There’s the pizza box—it’s made of cardboard, so it should belong in the recycling bin, right? Well, maybe. If any of that pizza grease made its way onto the cardboard, then it actually gets discarded into the food and yard waste bin. And the confusion doesn’t end there.
Fortunately, things don’t have to be this complicated, and help is on the way!
