Sometimes it's not enough to just get angry. Sometimes action is the only thing that will make a difference to our planet, which is how Tommy Kleyn of the Netherlands felt on his morning bike rides to work! He would regularly pass a stretch of river that was filthy with garbage. Then one day it was time; time to make a difference, time to take action, time to save the planet! He thought up a way that he could make a difference just by waking up 30 minutes earlier for work.
Kleyn made a resolution to collect one garbage bag full of litter each time he passed this particular river bank. It took me about 30 minutes to fill one garbage bag with trash, he said, but, one bag doesn't really make a dent in an area as polluted as this.
He continued picking up the same stretch of land day after day until he had cleaned the whole bank! Along the way he had the help of friends and the encouragement of others who were equally disgusted by the litter. Which is how he came up with his challenge to the world…
Kleyn challenges us all to pick up just one bag of garbage every year!
One bag is all he asks. It only takes 30 minutes and it can make a huge difference in your community and to the environment! Since Kleyn posted his project to Facebook, people from all over the world have been sharing his story and been getting involved! So we challenge you, dear reader, to get out there and take action. However you do it, whether you make it a competition between friends, a family outing, or a personal project like it was for Kleyn, you can save our planet. It's easy!
