Under is unlike any restaurant you’ve ever seen before. In fact, most of the world still hasn’t.
This is the first restaurant of its kind in Europe, Bored Panda reports, and not just because it offers diners an incredible view of the marine life deep below the surface of the North Sea. Under also hosts a marine research center, where scientists are able to study sea life behavior without intruding too much.
If you want to experience the innovative underwater restaurant in person, you’ll have to book a flight to Norway. In the meantime, we’ve got some pictures that might help you see just what you’re missing out on.
Under’s 111-foot-long view rises perpendicular to the North Sea, planted deep into the stone seabed. It’s concrete shell also acts as a surface where sea flora may soon thrive.
“Under is a natural progression of our experimentation with boundaries,” Snøhetta Founder and Architect, Kjetil Trædal Thorsen told Bored Panda. “As a new landmark for Southern Norway, Under proposes unexpected combinations of pronouns and prepositions, and challenges what determines a person’s physical placement in their environment.
“In this building, you may find yourself underwater, over the seabed, between land and sea. This will offer you new perspectives and ways of seeing the world, both beyond and beneath the waterline.”
All food served at Under is farmed or fished from sustainable sources. The restaurant’s staff is top-notch, too, featuring chefs from Michelin star restaurants all over Europe.
Visitors to the restaurant will be able to see the sea go through every season of change, through violent winter storms and calm summer doldrums.
Every bit of Under is built with both elegance and sustainability in mind, from the furniture to the flatware. The best part of Under, however, is located outside the dining room and kitchen. Marine researchers from around the world are welcome to use Under’s underwater cameras and viewing bays to study the unique North Sea ecosystem.
While frigid waters thrash around Lindesnes, Norway, diners and researchers within Under will we watching in undisturbed comfort.
